Every great design has a story, and Mazda CX-5 design changes since 2013 tell one of the best stories in the compact SUV class. At Basney Mazda in South Bend, IN, we love walking customers through that evolution. From its debut to today, the Mazda CX-5 has grown more expressive and more true to Mazda’s Kodo Design philosophy with every update.
Where It All Began: The 2013 MAZDA CX-5
The 2013 Mazda CX-5 marked a turning point, introducing Kodo Design, Mazda’s Soul of Motion philosophy, in a mass-production vehicle for the first time. Its lines were inspired by the Mazda Minagi concept, translating that show car’s flowing silhouette into a practical compact SUV. Even then, the exterior favored clean surfaces and confident proportions over sharp gimmicks.
A Bolder Redesign in 2017
When Mazda fully redesigned the Mazda CX-5 for 2017, Kodo Design matured into a sleeker, sculpted shape. A new grille and headlight treatment gave the redesigned model a sharper road presence. Inside, the cabin moved toward the luxe feel Mazda interiors are known for today.
Today’s MAZDA CX-5
Today’s Mazda CX-5 carries Kodo Design even further, with LED headlights, adaptive front lighting, and signature illumination front and rear. Black roof rails, a body-color rear roof spoiler, and available 19-inch alloy wheels round out a look that feels athletic standing still or in motion. Every line still traces back to the philosophy that started in 2013.
